Our Crazy Life

Raising three kids just one day at a time

Healthy Lifestyle Changes June 15, 2011

The last five weeks have been quite an adventure for our family since I joined Weight Watchers.  At the very beginning my biggest fear was how to cook for myself and for my family….as in separate meals…to keep them satisfied.  I barely have time to cook one meal, let alone two, so the answer was simple.  They’re eating what I eat.  I’ve been working very had to find recipes that are not only WW friendly, but also something that the entire family will eat and enjoy.

Here are a few changes we’ve made so far that have gone over well:

1. Whole wheat pasta – The kids are clueless.  They have no idea that I’ve switched to whole wheat pasta and therefore don’t realize that I’m packing their little bodies with more fiber and less sodium.

2. Brown rice – The advantages of switching to brown rice are numerous!  When I found that white rice is basically brown rice that has had essential nutrient removed during processing in order to make it easier and faster to cook, I knew that we were going to switch.  Another advantage is that rice bran oil (which is only present in brown rice) contains gammaoryzanol, a compound with the ability to lower cholesterol. Yeah!

3. Water, water and more water – I’m finally drinking more water and less Diet Pepsi.  I still allow myself one 20oz bottle every morning for the caffeine but then I switch .  I bought an Embark water bottle at Target which has the measurements along one side so that I know how much I’m drinking each day.  I try to drink 28oz before noon and then another 28oz before I leave at 4pm.  Besides that fact that I’m about to float away and go to the bathroom every 10 minutes, I feel better about

4. Fruit for dessert – Our kids had gotten used to having something sweet for dessert each night as long as they finished their dinner.  This would consist of anything from fruit snacks to a Twinkie.  Not exactly good for them, I know.  We made the switch to fresh fruit for dessert and it’s gone over pretty well.  All three enjoy apples, watermelon and pineapple the most.  Every once in a while we throw in a Twinkie if they’ve been especially good:)

5. Lots of veggies and fresh herbs – Recently I’ve cooked with more fresh veggies and herbs than I thought I ever would.  The kids have been good about trying everything at least once and the only things that Ayden is adamant about not eating are peas, carrots and mushrooms.  I’ve learned though that if the carrots and mushrooms are small enough and disguised well, they still get consumed.

6. Exercise – I’m back to working out 4-5 days a week like I was before getting pregnant with Miss Ava.  Mondays and Wednesday are treadmill days.  I do 30 minutes at a rate of 4 and incline of 1.5.  Tuesdays and Thursdays are toning days.  I do the full round of weight machines which work my legs and arms and then a lap of lunges around the running track.  All four days I do an abdominal workout to help lose my muffin top as well.  We encourage the kids to get their exercise as well.  The kids love to play outside and the boys are both taking karate and swim lessons.  During every karate lesson they include lots of stretching, push ups, sit ups and squats.  Ayden is also interested in taking tennis lessons so we’re looking into that when swim lessons are done for the summer.

I still have a way to go before I reach my weight loss goal, but I’m already feeling better about myself.  If I have a weak moment, I don’t beat myself up about it.  Each day is a new day and another chance to make healthier choices.  As we try more new recipes I’ll be sure to post the ones we like here on the blog.

Visitors from WI June 13, 2011

Eric and Jason have been great friends since middle school and their personalities are so similar it’s sometimes scary.  We’ve been missing our WI friends since moving to Georgia six years ago so we were beyond thrilled when Eric called to ask if he and his daughter, Riley, could come down for a visit.  They arrived this past Friday and it didn’t take more than 5 minutes for Riley to fit right in with our crazy bunch!

We had a relaxing start Saturday morning and then headed to the GA Aquarium in the afternoon.

The kids loved the area where you can actually touch baby sting rays and sharks.

The aquarium was packed and we lost Jameson about 67 times.  I was finally able to get all four kids together long enough for one picture.

I love this picture of Riley pointing Ayden’s head in the direction she wanted him to look.

We ended our visit with the penguins and beluga whales.

Since we managed to walk out of the aquarium with all four kids that we walked in with, we treated them to some free time at the playground while us parents took a breather.

Our next stop was to stuff our faces with pizza at Big Pie in the Sky in Kennesaw.  I have never before seen such enormous pizzas!  I shared a cheese pizza with the kids while Jason and Eric both wolfed down a slice of the “Carnivore”.  Yum, yum!

We ended our day with a dusk golf cart ride at Mimi & Bumpa’s house to see the fireflies.  I think by the time we got home, the parents were more worn out than the kids:)  Thanks Eric and Riley for sharing such a wonderful day with us!!!

The Cure for Boredom June 1, 2011

What do we do around our house when we (the parents) get bored?

We aim the leaf blower at them and watch what it does to their faces!!

Fun in the sprinkler July 22, 2010

Most weekends during the summer you’ll find us at Mimi & Bumpa’s floating in the pool.  There are times though when the laundry needs to get done and lawn has to be mowed.  It’s then that we bring out the sprinkler and let the kids tear up the yard.

Afterward we bundled the kids up in pajamas and blankets with a snack and good movie.  I love days like this…

…and so do they.

Life is good July 12, 2010

We’re good.  Life is good.  Just busy…

Last week and this week Ayden has swim lessons Monday – Thursday from 4:45 to 5:30.  I have to leave work a half hour early to pick him up and get him to the Dive Shop on time.  Jason has been trying to pick up the other two for me which I absolutely adore him for.

Jameson had his swim evaluation on Friday and he passed into Pre Level 2.  Ayden was slightly miffed that his brother gets to skip a level.  I was pretty proud of Jameson:)

I got a lot done at home on Saturday.  Laundry, cleaning, kicking the boys’ butts at Super Mario Brothers for Wii.  I’m trying to find the right work/fun balance.  Mario helps me out.

We had a babysitter Saturday night and my parents took us to Fogo de Chao for Jason’s birthday.  We overdosed on protein and then went home to collapse in bed.

On Sunday we had a modified scrap club.  Scrapping from 10am – 12:45pm.  Lunch at Five Guys and then the 2:10pm showing of Eclipse.  I love Edward and Belle together, but I was drooling all over myself every time they showed Jacob without his shirt.  Does he ever wear a shirt anymore?  Sigh…

Sort of got my scrapping mojo back.  It’s been missing all year.  I started working on the About Me book that we may or may not teach.  I love the way the cover turned out and can’t wait to get started on the inside.

Simply enjoying summer this year.  Lots of time by the pool, tasty food, children’s laughter, warm breezes and golf cart rides.  Oh, and just a few margaritas.

Happy 4th of July! July 2, 2010

It’s going to be a 3-day weekend of fun for our family.

Tomorrow we’re taking all three kids to a 12pm showing of Avatar – The Last Airbender.  There are may reasons for the 12pm time.

1. Matinee movies are much cheaper ($7 for the kids and only $7.50 for us adults)
2. Ava is free
3. This is Ava’s nap time so I’m praying she sleeps through the entire movie

The boys LOVE Avatar (the cartoon version) on Nickelodeon.  In fact, I found Books 1 – 3 on Netflix Instant Queue and I’ve been warned to NEVER delete them.  So they’re pretty excited to see this movie…especially in 3D.

After the movie we’ll head home so that the boys (and hopefully mommy) can rest.  I’m not a late owl so just thinking about staying up past my usual 9pm bedtime for the fireworks stressed me out.

On Sunday morning we’ll head to the pool, have an early evening cookout and then the boys are spending the night with Mimi & Bumpa.  Yeah!  Jason will probably have to work on Monday so Ava, the boys and I will hang at home and possibly have a picnic at the park if it isn’t too humid.

I plan on taking lots of pictures this weekend so look for a more colorful post next week.

Happy 4th!

Happy Father’s Day! June 18, 2010

Filed under: family — Jamie Payne @ 8:21 am

Happy Father Day to all the wonderful fathers and grandfathers out there!!  Tomorrow Jason and Ayden are going to Six Flags.  I got them season passes for early birthday presents and Ayden is super excited to go on some of the larger roller coasters:)  The rest of us will stay home in the morning to do some things around the house and then after naps we’re heading to Mimi and Bumpa’s for some pool time.  Sunday we’ll relax by the pool for most of the day and then have a cookout before Bumpa’s flight.  I love the summer months when most of our time is spent as a family by the pool.  Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
